How We Moved From Russia to America
3:56 PMSuddenly I was not the girl that went out to my grandmas garden to pick berries and play in the dirt. I was transformed into a new person who went to the city and was into fashion.
Yana and I were only 6 years old when our parents won a green card that changed our life completely. A green card is a permanent residence of the United States. Also described as:
Green card also refers to an immigration process of becoming a permanent resident. The green card serves as proof that its holder, a lawful permanent resident (LPR), has been officially granted immigration benefits, which include permission to reside and take employment in the United States.
It was a normal day in Pyatigorsk, Russia. Yana and I woke up to a beautiful morning and we were excited to walk to our local grocery store for some ice-cream! Our dad was at work, our mom stayed home that day and our brother, Roman, who was 11 years old at the time was at school. My Mom, Yana, and I got dressed and ready to go on a walk there. We made a stop by our mailbox and could not believe our eyes.
{There were many contests for winning a green card to go to the U.S. but it was very rare that someone won. We never thought that we will receive the green card.} We stopped our day short (Not even going for that ice cream run!!!) calling all our family to tell them the good news.
Shortly after, we started going to a class to learn the english language. Everything went by so quickly, a few weeks later everything was packed and ready to go. The only family we had was in Russia so it was a hard move for our family.
...It was a 16 hour flight to Washington, United States. Our flight had 1 stop in New York. It was hard to find our gate because we barley new any English...The airport workers asked us many questions that we did not understand, our parents were stressed and asked us for help because they paid lots of money for the classes we took to learn English. The only answer we had for them was.....hedgehog???? (looking back at this, we laugh every time). When we got to the Seatac airport, our friends who moved to America a couple years earlier greeted us.
8 years later we are still living in Seattle, Washington. We are going into 9th grade and it will be our 8th year anniversary of since we moved from Russia. We have visited Russia one time in 2nd grade, our grandparents visited us once as well, other than that we just Skype the rest of our family which can be hard at times. Yana and I are going to school, making youtube videos, writing a blog, and are fashion enthusiasts, posting on Instagram daily.
Comment if you have any questions about our move, or about us!
